YEAR OF RELEASE: 1990

STARRING: Julia Roberts, Richard Gere, Jason Alexander

In this modern Cinderella tale, Julia Roberts’ Vivian is a prostitute who meets and falls for a wealthy but unlucky-in-love businessman. After a week together, the two realize that as far apart as their worlds are, they may be perfect for each other.

One of the most iconic scenes in the movie occurs when Gere’s Edward takes Vivian to a formal business dinner. When she tries to taste the escargot, it pops right out of her hands and she exclaims, “Slippery little suckers!” This tuna tartare may not be snails, but it’s tasty and close enough for those with only moderately adventurous palates.

Should you decide to go in a far less formal direction for the evening, you can’t go wrong with black forest pancakes. For starters, this movie was made for food in bed. Plus, the cherries are a nod to the ones Vivian constantly pilfers from the neighborhood bar.
