While stars and stripes are two of my favorite patterns, I have always been against purchasing a full-on flag print bathing suit. I mean, I love America and I love someone who goes all in on a theme, but I try to shy away from occasion dressing. I prefer to shop the hot swim trends of the season and let my love of my country dictate the colors and prints I pick. The goal is to find a suit that will appear patriotic when you want it to be yet not fall flat in mid-August.
Here are some suits that combine 2019 swim trends and will have you fitting in perfectly at any 4th-themed pool party or BBQ.
1. Asymmetrical one-piece
Gone is the idea that one-pieces are just for “older ladies.” One-piece bathing suits are beyond chic, and they gives off a certain glamour in a way that is flattering, supportive and easy to wear. Of course, you could grab a solid option, but this style from Aerie is pretty perfect. It’s a modern, fresh spin on patriotism. Similarly, this navy and white style from Target is more subtle and less in your face, but still on message.

2. Gingham
We can’t promise your friends won’t make tablecloth jokes, but the gingham print is everywhere this year. It started on the runways last fall and now we see tons of poolside options. This J.Crew gingham ruffle bikini top and high-waisted bottoms also delivers on the ruffle trend and popular bottom shape (see below). There are many styles in black and white, and while black isn’t one of the three Americana colors, it does give us retro vibes that connect to our nation’s history. This keyhole one-piece from Loft really exemplifies the look. Get ready to channel Rachel McAdams in that classic beach scene from The Notebook.
3. Fruit-covered suits
Brands are throwing fruit on everything these days. Whether it’s just quirky or a subtle reminder to eat our fruits and veggies, we don’t care. They are just plain fun. Watermelons are a summer staple, and this Old Navy scoop neck top and bikini bottoms will let all the partygoers know you are down for some good times. Meanwhile, this Boden tankini top and bottoms are a bit more sophisticated but have the right hues for the Fourth of July.
4. High-rise bottoms
Another retro swim trend that has stuck around for a few seasons is the high-rise bottom. Farrah Fawcett taught us the power of a solid red bathing suit. This Galamaar brief also embraces the ‘80s high-cut leg, which will make someone like me who is 5 feet 4 inches magically appear 5 feet 7 inches. Belts are having a moment, so brands are adding them to bathing suits as well. This Summersalt bottom in navy will make you the classiest lady at the party.
5. White suits
What used to be a no-no because, well, no one wants to wear a see-through bathing suit, is now totally in. By simply slipping one on, you will exude confidence, not to mention, we all know how wonderful white is next to tanned skin. The plunging neckline of this ribbed style from Andie will double down on your sex appeal. If you prefer a more supportive, sporty option, Athleta’s scoop neck top will be your BFF.

6. Bandeau
This non-tanline-forming top is all the rage this season when it comes to swim trends. Not only does it expose your toned shoulders, it easily works with any clothing you put over it since it will completely hide underneath (an important aspect for those who do not like it when suit straps compete with the neck shape of your cover-up). Nautical blue and white stripes lend themselves perfectly, as seen in this H&M balconette. If you are just done with red, white and blue, pick a summery print, like tropical leaves or palm trees. No one will doubt your love for the holiday in this Lively floral style.
