A single air freshener can emit more than 100 different chemicals — which is exactly why you should put the aerosol bottle down if you want your home to smell like the pumpkin-spiced heaven that is fall. Instead, make your own DIY room spray with just a few simple ingredients and essential oils that won’t harm your body.

Anyone can spritz some lavender around their house, but where’s the fun in that? For these DIY room sprays, we wanted to get creative with some signature smells of fall.

Luckily, essential oil sets are available that will give you everything you need to make hundreds of room sprays. Make sure you’re getting the purest essential oils possible. Look for labeling that says “100% pure therapeutic grade.” We recommend something like this set from Amazon.

We created three autumn blends — pumpkin spice, cozy flannel and campfire — using witch hazel and three different blends of essential oils. Here are the oils you’ll need to make all three:

Choose from the combos we’ve listed, and then follow the steps below.

Cozy flannel

This scent has the same spicy notes as the pumpkin spice blend, but the patchouli gives it more of a forest smell.

To make a 4-ounce bottle of the cozy flannel DIY room spray:

Campfire

Fall means cozy campfires. This room spray includes our current favorite essential oil, sandalwood, for that comfy woodsy feeling.

Use this recipe to make a 4-ounce bottle of campfire DIY room spray:

  • 2 drops orange essential oil
  • 6 drops lavender essential oil
  • 6 drops frankincense
  • 10 drops sandalwood essential oil
  • 3 ounces distilled water

DIY room spray directions

To make all three scents, follow these steps:

  1. Add the essential oils for your chosen spray (from above) to the bottle. The bottom should now have a thin coating of the essential oil mix.
  2. Add witch hazel to fill one-fourth of the bottle. Don’t skimp on the witch hazel; it helps the solution blend. Shake the bottle to mix.
  3. Fill the bottle the rest of the way with distilled water. Add some dried flowers or cinnamon sticks for decoration if you’d like.

Ditch even more chemicals from your home by making DIY all-natural cleaners. They’re just as simple to whip up as these DIY room sprays. Check out the recipes in the video below.
