Southern sweet potato pie

A recipe inspired by Divas Can Cook

Give a Southern tradition a try with this delicious sweet potato pie recipe! While most people think of pumpkin pie as the iconic Thanksgiving dessert, its tuber cousin produces a pie that’s equally traditional and delicious.

Here's a Thanksgiving recipe from Food Blogs Star Monique Kilgore of Divas Can Cook! See more from Monique's holiday menu here.

Monique’s Southern sweet potato pie recipe

During the pre-Civil War era, the sweet potato was highly prized in the South for baking because it has a longer shelf life and produces a more plentiful harvest than pumpkin. The hearty, sweet tuber can be used in an endless variety of ways from French fries to pancakes, but many people don’t realize what a superior pie it can produce.

Monique’s take on the classic recipe combines the creamy orange flesh of the potato with butter, evaporated milk, brown sugar, cinnamon and spices to create the perfect bite of fall flavors. A touch of warm vanilla and a splash of zingy citrus wakes up the taste buds.

And talk about a flaky crust… use this homemade pie crust recipe to create the perfect foundation for your masterpiece. (If you’re pressed for time, don’t worry: A store-bought crust will do just fine in a pinch!)

If you just can’t wait to try it, serve it warm, topped with a dollop of ice cream or whipped cream. Or, let it cool in the fridge for a few hours for a more dense, creamy experience.

Here’s a fun idea for pie lovers: Make up sweet potato, pumpkin and pecan pies using these delicious pie recipes, and have your family conduct a pie taste test (for science, of course). The hardest part will be choosing a favorite!
