Dinner & a movie: ‘V for Vendetta’

The iconic thriller film V for Vendetta came out in 2005 — more than a hot minute ago, we admit — but it’s still incredibly relevant. Starring Natalie Portman (who looks absurdly beautiful with a bald head, tbh) and Hugo Weaving, V for Vendetta is an important reminder to stand up for what you believe in, no matter the cost.

Our suggestion for a refresher course on this life lesson? Invite a few of your rebellious pals over and celebrate Nov. 5 with a viewing of this modern classic, complete with a tasty menu for the occasion.

After all, you can’t start a revolution hungry!

Dress the part

We aren’t necessarily going to suggest that everyone who attends the soiree wear a Guy Fawkes mask — that would be kinda creepy, no? — but asking friends to come over dressed in their idea of rebel attire could be fun.

From the dress that your significant other never liked, to a T-shirt with a controversial message, go with whatever you proudly want to display. We’re giving you permission.

And now, for our feature presentation…

Beverage: Bonfire cocktails

Nov. 5, known as Guy Fawkes Night, is commemorated as “Bonfire Night” in the United Kingdom. And while there are a few different drinks to toast the occasion, we’re partial to our brown sugar-citrus hot (like a bonfire, get it?) toddy.

Beverage: Tea time

For the teetotalers and tea-drinkers attending movie night, a spot of tea is always a welcome option, particularly when we’re talking about Great Britain. We found this London fog Earl Grey tea latte on Savory Tooth, and it’s the perfect cozy beverage to enjoy on a chilly night.

Appetizer: Egg in a waffle hole

When V makes breakfast for Evey in his chic underground abode, we find ourselves weirdly charmed.

Looking for a yummy way to use eggs and bread just like V did? Try this egg in a waffle hole from Bijoux and Bits. Because it’s typically a breakfast food, it makes a fun alternative to the traditional appetizer.

Entrée: (V for) vegetables Wellington

We couldn’t help ourselves — we had to have a main course that started with the letter V. This hearty and cozy vegetables Wellington inspired by Vegetarian Times offers the best of everything! It’s filling and savory with an assortment of flavors and textures.

Your guests will love it (even if they’re typically meat-eaters), and you’ll love how easy it is to prepare.

Dessert: Slow cooker hot buttered apples

Evey loves the food V makes for her because it has real butter in it, a rare commodity for dystopian London. Fortunately for us, real butter is still easy to come by (praise be). So, what better reason to make these incredibly delicious slow cooker hot buttered apples from Budget Bytes?

It’s a simple recipe — just a few ingredients, the most substantial of which is apples — and the rich flavor of melted butter won’t go unnoticed by your guests. Plus, it’s a great way to use apples before they go bad!
