Mulled wine sangria

With fragrant ingredients like star anise,  cinnamon sticks and cloves, this spiced cocktail just screams “wintertime.” Plus, merlot and Brandy will certainly keep you warm and toasty, and brown sugar and ginger ale will sweeten things up. Mulled Wine Sangria

Ingredients

  • 4 cups merlot wine
  • 1/4 cup dark brown sugar
  • 3 whole star anise
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 teaspoon whole cloves
  • 1/2 cup orange juice
  • 1/2 cup Brandy
  • 1 orange sliced
  • 12 ounces ginger ale

Instructions

  1. In a small skillet add 1 cup red wine, dark brown sugar, star anise, cinnamon sticks and cloves.
  2. Bring to a simmer, stir and remove from heat. Let cool to room temperature and strain out whole spices.
  3. In a large pitchers add cooled spiced wine, the other remaining 3 cup of red wine, orange juice, Brandy, orange slices and ginger ale.
  4. Taste to see if it needs more sweetness. If so, add a few tablespoons of quick dissolving sugar. Keep cool and serve over ice.
