Easy patriotic centerpiece with red and white straws

Cute straws aren’t just fun in party drinks! You can make a colorful patriotic centerpiece out of nothing more than red and white straws, a mason jar, rubber bands and ribbon, with this craft inspired by Landeelu.

You have to appreciate an art project that requires only four materials — at least two of which you probably already have. A trip to a dollar or craft store will be the only stop you’ll need to make before you can get started. For the straws, you can stick with the patriotic theme, or choose your favorite colors to match your table setting or decor.

Once you have your supplies laid out, you can complete this project in 10 minutes or so — so you can squeeze it in as a last-minute decoration or quick creative fix for a Sunday afternoon.

If you spend a little extra on quality straws, you can reuse them for future projects. Simply glue only every 10th or so straw to the jar to help ease the process. The rest of the straws will be held to the jar by the rubber bands and ribbon. After your festive occasion has passed, you can remove the loose straws and repurpose them.

If you’re not planning on reusing them, just glue each straw to the jar. When the occasion’s over, carefully pack the centerpiece away to bring out again next year.

This is an easy craft for kids to do with parents, the neighborhood kids or classmates. Those little hands can add the spots of glue, put the straws under the rubber bands, and help tie the ribbon.

Mason jars are popular among crafters for good reason: They’re sturdy, easy to find and inexpensive. If you want a different look for this project, try using small tin containers or woven baskets.

Depending on the size of the container you use, you can embellish the centerpiece in any number of ways to enhance its appearance. A votive or even taller pillar candle would be a lovely addition to a mason jar. You also could place a small plant in the jar and set it near a window as a multi-purpose decoration. You could even fill it with some red, white and blue candy for a patriotic treat.

Place the finished product on the dining table, entry table, kitchen counter, patio table — really anywhere you’d like a splash of color. Put one on a buffet table at a get-together you’re hosting, or place multiple centerpieces around your party area.

This centerpiece would be a great gift for neighbors or teachers, too — especially if it’s holding a little something special!
